US President Donald Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against media magnate Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) for at least $10 billion. This followed the publication of the Epstein report. Trump called the WSJ report “false, malicious, defamatory and fake news”. The defamation lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami, cites “financial & reputational harm” caused by the report and also names Dow Jones Corporation and News Corp. as defendants. The WSJ owner, Dow Jones, is a subsidiary of News Corp., owned by Murdoch. The lawsuit followed a WSJ article on Trump's friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, who was accused of sex trafficking of underage girls. In 2019, Epstein was found hanging in his New York prison cell while awaiting trial. The July 17 WSJ report stated that Trump wrote a letter to Epstein, illustrated with a naked woman and hinting at a shared "secret". The letter was reportedly a contribution to a birthday album for Epstein in 2003. Trump has ordered his attorney general, Pam Bondi, to seek the release of grand jury testimony against the disgraced financier after facing backlash.
