At the time, the term groove metal had become synonymous with non-other than Pantera, who by this point in their career had already pushed the genre into the spotlight with Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven.

Roots, however, was much more than just a Groove Metal album. It took influence from traditional Brazilian culture and heritage, featuring the enigmatic voices of an indigenous Brazilian Tribe. A tribe, one of many, that were facing the end of their culture due to aggressive governmental policies. Something Max Cavelera had to speak out about.
