How I became a full time Videographer and Drone Pilot at 19:
At 16, I decided to leave school as I had no interest in any subjects other than media. I was told by many I’d go nowhere without qualifications and university - but that route was not for me. I decided to pursue my passion in videography & drone flying and that soon became my full time career by the age of 19.
I built up a portfolio in both videography and drone flying, particularly FPV, which I have spent over 4 years mastering and now I’m privileged to call what was previously a hobby my full time job. I started posting videos online of scenic drone shots from around country, along with approaching businesses offering videography services in a wide range of sectors. Over time I managed to land small projects which led to bigger projects and enabled me to buy gear, build my portfolio and ultimately a name for myself locally as a drone operator and videographer 🚁
Qualifications and what you have on paper means absolutely nothing in the freelance creative industry. Clients want you see the work you’ve produced, not what degrees you have in X, Y or Z. Your portfolio and experience is much more important than your on-paper qualifications in this industry, in my opinion. 🎥🚁
School didn’t work for me as there was absolutely no push to entrepreneurship and starting your own business. It was all about heading off to Uni, getting your degree and getting a steady job in a STEM career. Although that works for many, it wasn’t for me ❌
My advice to anyone wanting to get into the world of Commercial Drone flying or Videography would be just do it! Put yourself out there, go out and shoot stuff, no matter what it is and build your portfolio. I look back and cringe at the stuff I used to post when I first started, the many hundreds of cold call emails I used to send begging for work, but that’s all part of the journey. Everyone starts somewhere and you’ll only succeed if you put yourself out there 💪🙌🎥
