Inspired by real events, Hurry Up Tomorrow follows a fictionalized version of pop megastar, The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) as he is pulled into a nightmarish odyssey by a stranger (Jenna Oretga) after losing his voice on stage in front of thousands of fans during a concert. What follows is…awful.
The career of The Weeknd these last few years has had its ups & downs to say the least. After losing his voice mid-show at SoFi Stadium in 2022 on the After Hours Till Dawn Tour, the “Blinding Lights” singer decided that it might be time to hang up the mantle that made him famous and start anew under his birthname, Abel Tesfaye. This was coming as he was gearing up to star in the hotly anticipated HBO series, The Idol. A collaboration between him & Euphoria creator, Sam Levinson co-starring Lily Rose Depp, Rachel Sennott, Troye Sivan, Jennie, Hari Nef and Mike Dean. The pop star to actor pipeline is a familiar and beloved arc in show business and this show was The Weeknd’s red carpet arrival. Unfortunately, the series was panned by critics, who specifically called out Abel’s lackluster acting as one of the show’s fatal flaws.
Rather than walk back his claims that The Weeknd is over and retire from acting, Abel doubled down. Announcing that his final project under the name would not only be an album but would be accompanied by a theatrically released companion film directed by Trey Edward Shults (Waves, It Comes At Night) and co-written by himself.
While the Hurry Up Tomorrow album was praised for its maximalist production, vocal performances, and blockbuster feature list (Playboi Carti on “Timeless,” Anitta on “São Paulo,” as well as appearances by frequent collaborators like Travis Scott, Future, Lana Del Rey & Metro Boomin) its film was not so lucky. Debuting at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering some of the worst reviews for a movie in 2025 and becoming an instant meme on the internet for Abel’s acting. The film is also being called a "box office bomb."
Can The Weeknd really not act? Is the movie one of the worst of the year? Can The Weeknd be saved? Is the soundtrack even good? Is this really the end of The Weeknd? How bad is it? Why is it getting slammed by critics? Is the hate justified?
