Here’s a closer look at a remarkable Cold War-era tool, the Nero Lemania stopwatch, made for the Royal Navy. This stopwatch was designed to help submarine crews and naval operators measure distances underwater, using sonar. No calculators, no guesswork — just press the button, listen for the echo, and the hand tells you the range in yards.

🔍 What Was It Used For?

On submarines, to time the echo of a sonar ping and know how far away a contact was.
During torpedo drills, to measure how long a torpedo took to reach its target.
On surface ships, to judge distances or closing speeds — critical info during operations.

🛠 How It Worked
You'd send out a sonar ping, start the timer, and stop it when the echo came back. The hand’s position told you the distance right away — perfectly calibrated to the speed of sound in water.

This particular model dates to 1971. In this short video, I demonstrate the start, stop, and reset functions, and then give a look at the movement inside — including the balance wheel and the mechanical stopper in action.
