From January to February 1976, Angola was in the grip of a brutal civil war. The MPLA, backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba, fought to secure control against UNITA and the FNLA, supported by the United States, South Africa and Zaire. Cuban troops helped the MPLA push back South African forces and take key areas including Luanda. As Cold War tensions played out on Angolan soil, this period marked a decisive step towards a one party Marxist state and a conflict that would last for decades.

ITN's Keith Hatfield reported from the scene.
