On 14 February 1985, just a month after the launch of the futuristic Sinclair C5 e-tricycle, student Nicholas Botting was remanded on unconditional bail after police found him allegedly drunk in charge of the electric vehicle at 4am in the morning. The C5 had been won by Botting's friend, Kirsty Nightingale, in a raffle at a Valentine's Eve ball, and Botting had offered to drive it home for her. ITN followed the unusual story into the spring, as prosecutors struggled to bring a case against Botting. The sticking point was a technicality: they couldn't prove what the Sinclair C5 actually was. Was it a car? Was it a tricycle? Was it something in between?
