Hip-hop will enter the new decade as the most popular genre of music in America, the fourth most popular genre in the world, and the most influential culture in the world. It’s true 6ix9ine could come back and prosper after becoming the poster boy for social media age studio gangsters. It’s true that becoming a meme is a real marketing strategy in today’s rap game. It’s also true that hip-hop sonically overlaps with pop more than it ever has. Despite all of that, hip-hop has evolved in positive ways and has grown into a major success story with the potential to be even bigger in the 2020s. As 2019 approaches the finish line, we have scattered yet useful information about new projects from some of hip-hop’s biggest artists. Where there is no information, we have context from the recent past to help us anticipate the future.
