Sayyida al-Hurra: Born around 1485 in Chefchaouen, Morocco, to a family of Andalusian nobles who fled Spain after the Reconquista, Sayyida al-Hurra, meaning "noble lady who is free and independent," became the governor of Tétouan after her husband's death in 1515. She allied with the Ottoman corsair Hayreddin Barbarossa, commanding pirate fleets in the western Mediterranean to avenge the expulsion from Andalusia. In 1541, she married the Moroccan Sultan Ahmed al-Wattasi, marking the only time a Moroccan king married away from the capital. Her reign ended in 1542 when her son-in-law overthrew her. She retired to Chefchaouen, where she died in 1552.

Lyrics:

Oh, I am Sayyida, queen of the sea
From Tétouan's shores to the high Barbary
A widow turned warrior, the tides I command
With cannons and sails, we take every land

I married a king but kept my own throne
The waters I ruled, fierce and alone
From Spain to Gibraltar, they fear my name
For Sayyida’s wrath, the sea is her flame

Yo ho, yo ho, the pirate's life for me
With the winds of the Rif and the waves of the sea!
By Allah's name, I'll conquer the foam
With treasure and glory, I'll bring them all home!

From a princess of Granada to exile’s cruel hand
I fled to Morocco, to a harsh, foreign land
The loss of Al-Andalus burned in my soul
So I raised up my banner and took back control

With the Ottoman fleet, we sailed side by side
For freedom and fortune, through oceans so wide
Barbarossa my ally, our enemies we fight
Under the crescent moon, we strike in the night

Yo ho, yo ho, the pirate's life for me
With the winds of the Rif and the waves of the sea!
By Allah's name, I'll conquer the foam
With treasure and glory, I'll bring them all home!

Oh, King of Morocco, you courted my hand
But I made you come to me in my own land
I wed on my terms, with my power intact
No queen before me had ever done that

I led my own fleets, I feared no man
My pirate empire spread like the sands
From Portugal’s ships to Spain’s mighty fleet
They trembled at night from the sounds of my feet

Yo ho, yo ho, the pirate's life for me
With the winds of the Rif and the waves of the sea!
By Allah's name, I'll conquer the foam
With treasure and glory, I'll bring them all home!

In 1515, I rose to command
Ruling Tétouan’s shores, a fierce iron hand
With letters of marque, I raided the coast
Spanish and Portuguese hated me most

I freed Andalusians, enslaved by the crown
The captives I saved, I never backed down
I built up my city, with riches untold
The sea gave me power, but I kept my soul

Yo ho, yo ho, the pirate's life for me
With the winds of the Rif and the waves of the sea!
By Allah's name, I'll conquer the foam
With treasure and glory, I'll bring them all home!

No crown of gold, no king by my side
The sea is my kingdom, and freedom's my bride!
I’ve sailed through the storm, I've sailed through the fight
The waves are my allies, the moon is my light

My name was feared in every port
From Lisbon’s bay to Venice’s court
A corsair, a queen, and a warrior bold
In the annals of history, my story is told

But treachery came, from those I held near
They stripped me of power, but I showed no fear
My reign may have ended, but legends live long
As I sail the seas forever in song

Yo ho, yo ho, the pirate's life for me
With the winds of the Rif and the waves of the sea!
By Allah's name, I'll conquer the foam
With treasure and glory, I'll bring them all home!

Yo ho, yo ho, the pirate's life for me
With the winds of the Rif and the waves of the sea!
By Allah's name, I'll conquer the foam
With treasure and glory, I'll bring them all home!
