In the desolate inner city suburbs of Detroit a new movement is happening. Young white kids are occupying empty, abandoned houses in what are predominately black neighbourhoods. But in these new forming pockets of community in the urban jungle, race is no longer the issue, everyone in these neighbourhoods must contend with the same issues. Basic requirements like water, electricity, even healthy food are in short supply. In a city bankrupt by corrupt officials, co-ops of young people have taken it upon themselves to rebuild.
In this video we take a tour of one of the occupied abandoned houses and learn that in this post industrial wasteland, a new class of people have formed, urban survivalists living outside the system.
Many are artists and musicians, farmers and alchemists. Could Detroit become an example to all of how to survive when the system fails you.
