Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center where talented scientists and engineers work together to overcome the biggest challenges facing humanity. For nearly 30 years, one of the tools helping them do that has been the Advanced Photon Source (APS), which generates ultrabright X-ray beams for research across the scientific spectrum.

Scientists studying the air, water, and soil of our planet face significant challenges. Understanding of complex biological and Earth systems requires observations across small length-scales, including atomic-level insights, to address critical questions, such as how to revitalize soil for crops or create biofuels more efficiently. Without this deeper comprehension, developing sustainable solutions to environmental and bioeconomy challenges remains an uphill battle.

The eBERlight program exists to introduce biological and environmental scientists to the APS. The bright and coherent X-ray beams available at the APS can uncover the secrets held by soil samples, plants and the atmosphere, to name a few. Working together, researchers and APS staff can design X-ray experiments that will open new doors of discovery and give us a deeper understanding of the world we live in and the organisms we share it with.
