How do we treat heart health anxiety or cardiophobia? My recommendations include the following 5 steps:

1. I recommend having a medical and cardiac evaluation to rule out any medical concerns.

2. Participate in daily stress management practices. I recommend stress management practices like breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, walks and exercise be practiced as part of a routine plan versus practiced as a direct response to an episode of high anxiety or panic. I will include a link below to a video on 8 researched and recommended ways to lower your stress and cortisol levels.

3. Use evidenced-based CBT methods to treat health anxiety and panic disorder by using ERP, exposure and response prevention therapy and interoceptive sensitivity retraining. These treatments train your brain to better tolerate anxiety sensations in your body and to no longer associate those bodily sensations with danger. 4. Identify and systematically eliminate safety and avoidance behaviors. This includes things like eliminating heart rate monitoring with different devises like watches or excessive googling or other attempts at seeking reassurance. There are hundreds of things that people do to feel safe without realizing that those actions in the long run are only reinforcing their health anxiety and panic.

5. Learn how to change the way you cope with anxiety and fear. Learn strategies to welcome and allow cardiac and anxiety sensations in the body without resistance or avoidance.
