One of the biggest critical thinking questions: why is there so little good thinking? For more, come to The Idea Emporium:

Now back to good thinking. It's not that developing critical thinking skills is so hard. There seems to be a taboo.

We're supposed to be so enlightened in the West, so open. In some ways, we are. Not when it comes to critical thinking problems. There seems to be, at present, a huge block within many people. They respond with, "Don't tell me what to think," or "I know what I think."

That isn't the question.

Or they back off with, "All opinions are equal. All cultures, religions are equal."

And then they go, "Who am I to say what's right or wrong?"

All these responses amount to the same thing: no critical thinking, no creative thinking. You could even say, it's not a matter of good thinking or bad thinking. It's just plain not thinking.

I look at why this is happening in a short video on the fear factor in people's lives:

One big secret is that it's become taboo to think many things, to ask certain questions, to follow the rules of logic - such easy rules.

I care about good thinking, about addressing critical thinking questions and problems - in other words, facing reality with emotional strength including by developing critical thinking skills and daring to use them.

Perhaps we first need to address the fear factor in the West, so that people will much more readily think well and freely. I don't mean that people are consciously afraid of thinking well. My guess is that most people would snort if I suggested many people back off thinking well because of fear.

I'm open to your input: why do you think there are so many blocks against critical thinking, good thinking - easier than swimming, skiing, even that surfing the web?
