Craving uruguayan asado grill? In today’s video, we’re taking you on a food adventure to Mercado del Puerto for Uruguayan asado. This is Montevideo’s Meat Market which features numerous restaurants under one roof, all of them specializing in BBQ, also known as asado! This meat market is located by the port in front of Montevideo Bay, and it has been home to steakhouses and seafood restaurants since 1960. There are countless restaurants to choose from, and part of the experience is that you can watch your food be grilled right in front of you.

We ended up at Don Garcia and had an excellent meal. For lunch, we ordered chorizo (pork sausage), morcilla (blood sausage), vacio (flank steak), bife ancho (ribeye steak or prime rib), fries, and a salad to try and keep things healthy. Of course, we had to pair the meal with the house wine. We hope you enjoy this Uruguayan food video, and if you're ever visiting Montevideo, be sure to stop by the Meat Market for a great BBQ meal!

🥩 Mercado del Puerto: The Ultimate Uruguayan Asado BBQ Experience in Montevideo 🇺🇾🔥

👋 Arrival at Mercado del Puerto | #MontevideoFoodie

Greetings from Montevideo, Uruguay! In today’s episode, we take you to Mercado del Puerto, Montevideo’s legendary port market, famous for its asado (grilled meats) and lively atmosphere. Forget about fruit and veggie stalls—this market is all about meat! Restaurants line the halls, each with sizzling wood-fired grills and mountains of beef ready to tempt your appetite.

🔥 Choosing a Grill & Getting Seated | #AsadoLife

With so many BBQ joints under one roof, it’s tough to choose where to sit. We select Don Garcia based on local reviews, avoiding the more touristy spots in favor of authentic Uruguayan cuisine and friendly, no-pressure service. The open kitchen lets us watch the grill masters at work, stacking logs and turning meats over glowing embers for that unbeatable smoky flavor.

🥓 Appetizers: Chorizo & Blood Sausage | #UruguayanFlavors

We start the feast with classic starters: chorizo sausage and morcilla (blood sausage). The chorizo is perfectly crisp, while the blood sausage is rich and creamy—spreadable on bread for the true local experience. Everything comes with a colorful completa salad (lettuce, tomato, beets, carrots, onions, egg), and of course, a jug of house wine to round out the table.

🥩 The Main Event: Flank Steak & Prime Rib | #MeatLover

Next, the stars of the show arrive: Vacio (flank steak) and Bife Ancho (prime rib/ribeye). These generous cuts are shared family-style, meltingly tender and full of flavor from the wood-fired grill. Crispy fries and fresh bread fill out the meal—get ready for those “meat sweats!”

💸 Prices & Market Tips | #TravelAdvice

This amazing lunch—three meats, fries, salad, bread, and wine for three adults—costs just over 2,100 Uruguayan pesos (approx. $56 USD). It’s more than you’d pay in Argentina, but the quality and portions make it worthwhile. Pro tip: Some restaurants target tourists aggressively, so look for places filled with locals for the most authentic experience.

🏙️ Exploring the Neighborhood | #MontevideoVibes

The Mercado is perfectly situated for a scenic stroll. Walk from Plaza Independencia along the pedestrian streets, full of shops, palm trees, and a tropical vibe, or stretch your legs beside the river on the city’s miles-long waterfront promenade. It’s a great way to work off your meal!

🍰 Dessert & Afternoon Tea | #SweetTooth

After lunch, we stop by a neighborhood pastry shop for classic Uruguayan desserts: postre chajá (sponge cake with cream, meringue, and dulce de leche), coconut macaroons, and milhojas (layered pastries with dulce de leche). Afternoon tea doubles as dinner—a sweet ending to a big eating day!

🥪 Chivito vs. Chivito: Food Culture Tips | #FoodFacts

We chat about Uruguay’s famous chivito—not a goat dish here, but a steak sandwich loaded with ham, cheese, bacon, egg, and more, usually with fries and potato salad. Fun fact: in Argentina, “chivito” means grilled baby goat, so don’t get confused when ordering!

💬 Reflections & What’s Next | #TravelVlog

A delicious and memorable first day in Montevideo! We loved the Mercado del Puerto experience, and can’t wait to explore more local dishes (including chivito sandwiches) in upcoming episodes. Stay tuned as we continue our Uruguayan adventure.
