Rap is by far the most lyrical form of music on the planet. Never mind the excessive mumbling and A-B-C- dumbing down of the craft. Rappers overall pack more words into their verses than any singer in rock, pop, r&b, reggae, or country music. But there are some hip-hop artists that exceed the typical word counts of the genre and mash multiple syllables into their bars with a style referred to as “fast rap.” As gimmicky and cartoonish as a term like “fast rap” sounds, this fast-forward verbal technique doesn’t involve hiking up the speed of a verse in the studio until the spitter sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks. “Fast rap” is done live on the mic and is a style that has an extensive history, utilized by many of the most respected lyricists.
