Today, we’re at 42 Gear Street Four checking out three new (old!) Orange vintage reissue pedals with Perfecto de Castro!

Check the pedals out here:

These new pedals – the Sustain, Distortion and Phaser – are based on originals from the 1970s, and Orange decided to renew them based on massive demand from users on their various social media channels. Using the expertise and help of their fans, along with the tea-stained original schematics they still had from the 70s, they’ve now brought the pedals back with a few new tweaks. Made in England to the highest quality standards, they’re a fresh take on these classic stompboxes, with classic Orange tones throughout.

The new Sustain pedal is a compressor, or sustainer, or what Orange call “like an overdrive for your clean tone”. Sticking as closely as possible to its original inspiration, the Sustain is surprisingly flexible considering you only have two controls: Level and Depth. You can use it as a standard compressor, pure volume boost, sparkle enhancer, or as a way to make your notes ring out as long as you need them.

The Sustain sticks as closely as it can to its 70s forefather, but it does add a couple of new tricks. You get a smoother bloom – thanks to its differential side-chain – and an LED that switches from blue to purple when gain reduction kicks in.

The new Distortion pedal takes the original Distortion pedal and keeps the classic 70s amp-like distortion tones, but updates almost everything else. So, instead of a back-to-back diode design, you get an amp circuit including a tone stack (bass and mids are fixed, but there’s a treble trim pot inside the pedal) under the hood, and the Level and Depth controls on top let you dial in everything from a clean boost through to low gain drive tones, thick rhythm sounds, and snarling fuzzy leads with maximum saturation.

The Phaser pedal is the simplest of the three, featuring a single Speed knob. Despite that, though, it offers you a tour through all the psychedelic swirly tones you could ever need, from slow throbs to fast, pulsing stabs and rotary-like oscillations – and everything in-between!

In the video, Perfecto and I go through each pedal one by one, stack them, and generally make as many musical sounds as we can!
