Script: Did you know there's a town in Russia that's completely surrounded by Norway? It's
called Barentsburg and it's home to just around 400 people. This town is in Svalbard, an
area north of Mainland Norway, discovered back in the 16th century. Svalbard used to
be open to everyone until the Paris Peace Conference when it was decided that it should
be part of Norway but with some conditions. One condition was that any country
involved in the treaty could use Svalbard's natural resources, and citizens from any
country could visit without a visa.
In the 1930s, the Soviet Union bought a mining town called Barentsburg from the Dutch.
Because Svalbard was visa-free, anyone could come and see their town. They wanted to
showcase the success of communism. At its peak, about 1,500 people lived in
Barentsburg. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city has been declining
steadily.
The Russian government keeps this town alive because Barentsburg sits in the middle
of some important sea routes in the Arctic. These routes will become even more
important as the climate changes.
