
Sean Connery famously turned down the role of Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings because — by his own admission — he just didn’t understand the script. Despite being offered a reported $30 million plus a share of the box office (which would’ve netted him hundreds of millions), he said he “never got it.” The fantasy world, the language, the lore — it all left him baffled. Connery wasn’t alone; the scale and tone of the project confused a few others at the time. Ironically, Ian McKellen stepped in and made Gandalf one of cinema’s most iconic characters. Connery missed Middle-earth — and a mountain of gold.
