ExRP isn't only about the application of the technical skills required. But it's also about the WAY we approach our clients and the behavior we model as OCD specialists.
If we are apprehensive or fearful during our clients' exposure practices, this impacts our clients' ability to feel confident and empowered.
Part of our job as their therapist is to demonstrate confidence both professionally and personally. Our clients need to feel our confidence in our competence as ExRP specialists. They also need to feel our confidence in them. Our clients need to see and feel that we believe in their ability to face and overcome their fears and that we’re not afraid to do their exposures alongside them.
We're not only teaching our clients the technical skills of ExRP. We are also modeling the emotional and behavioral skills needed to implement ExRP.
Being an OCD specialist is so much more than a checklist of do's and don't's. It requires ongoing examination and adaptation of both our professional and personal lives!
