Have you tried to take a portrait towards the sun and got a silhouette instead, or wish that your subject was brighter? Backlighting (shooting with the sun behind your subject) is how I often get my light & airy look, but it has to be exposed manually to guarantee that the camera won't try to expose for the sky instead. In this video, I show you how I do it on my iPhone, and how I use my DSLR's in-camera meter to get the perfect exposure.
