On 25 June 1991, Slovenia declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. There followed a ten-day conflict in which the defence forces of the fledgling state sought to fight off units of the Yugoslav People’s Army sent in to quash the uprising. Fighting was brought to an end on 7 July 1991, when the signing of the Brioni Accords began a period of negotiation which would ultimately lead to Slovenian independence. Presented here is a compilation of frontline reports covering the military, diplomatic and humanitarian aspects of the war, from its beginning in June 1991 through to January 1992, when the European Community officially recognised the newly independent Republic of Slovenia.
