'December 19, 1961' is a historic date that holds a special place in every Goan's heart, as the land of Goa was freed from centuries of colonial rule on this very day.

Among the many historic landmarks that Goa possesses is the Aguada Fort. Join us as we explore the history of this iconic site and its significance in Goa’s liberation.

The fort was originally built by the Portuguese in 1612 to protect their territories from foreign invaders. The ideal location of the fort, surrounded by the Arabian Sea, made it an essential asset for the Portuguese.

However, during Salazar’s administration, the site was converted into a prison.
Goans involved in the Freedom Struggle were captured and held at the Aguada Jail Complex, including eminent personalities such as Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and T. B. Cunha.

In 1961, the Indian Armed Forces gathered around Portuguese-held territories, including their military bases.

A group of troops was sent to the Aguada Jail to free the freedom fighters imprisoned there. On December 19, 1961, Goa was declared a Union Territory of India, marking the liberation of Goa from colonial rule.


Today, the site serves as an interactive museum, telling the stories of Goa’s history and the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the region's freedom.
