This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 Subaru Ascent three-row mid-size SUV. Built on the Subaru Global Platform, the Ascent offers seating for 7-8 passengers in a comfortable and spacious SUV. With 8.7 inches of ground clearance and standard AWD, this Ascent is a great family hauler. One thing I really like about this Ascent are the 2nd row seating options on the lower trims. 7 or 8 passenger seating is available on the Touring and Limited trims which are the two trims above the base model. The top two trims get captain’s chairs only and the base trim a bench seat.
The Ascent comes standard with a dark grey grille with black painted roof rails, body coloured door handles and 18” wheels, 20” wheels are standard two up from the base trim and the top two trims get a high gloss black grille and chrome door handles. A power liftgate is standard one up from the base model. EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is also standard which includes, pre-collision braking pre-collision brake assist, pre-collision throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane sway warning, traffic jam assist, lane centring assist, lane keep assist and lead vehicle start alert. The Ascent has a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT; it has 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. For fuel economy, this Subaru gets 11.6L/100km city, 21 MPG and 9L/100km, 27 MPG highway. It can tow 5,000 pounds and Subaru offers a warranty of 3 years or 60,000 km/36,000 miles. The Ascent comes with plenty of standard features including, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 6.5” touchscreen, 8-passenger seating, 8-way power driver’s seat, heated cloth seats, a 4-way manual passenger seat and EyeSight driver assist technology. In Canada, the “Best Value” trim goes to the Touring with the option of a bench seat or captain’s chairs, a panoramic sunroof, the larger 8” touchscreen, water repellent cloth upholstery and a power liftgate. I’m impressed captain’s chairs are offered on this lower trim but, I would like to see the 8” touchscreen standard on all models, 6.5” is too small for this class. One of my favourite trims is the Limited for an extra $5,500 CAD compared to the Touring. It has more features like a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, heated steering wheel, driver seat memory, passenger power seats, leather seating surfaces and heated second row seats. The top trim gets ventilated front seats. The Ascent has a versatile cargo area; both the second and third row seats have 60/40- split flat folding to accommodate different size items and the captain’s chairs fold flat too. The cargo area has a square opening to make loading and unloading much easier for families. It has more overall cargo space than the Pilot, CX-9, Pathfinder and Highlander. The Ascent offers more 3rd row space than the Highlander and Pathfinder, but less than the rest of the competition.JD Power gives the 2021 Ascent an overall score of 80/100 and a quality and reliability score of 79/100. CarEdge states the Ascent will retain 60% of its value after 5 years.
