12. SOUNDBITE (French) Philippe Bergerot, President, French League Against Cancer:
"For World 'No Tobacco Day' on May 31st, we conducted a survey, as we had done a few years ago, which fully confirmed the stance of the French people. Two-thirds of the French wanted to expand smoke-free areas, and in particular, to be a bit stricter on tobacco regulations. When we delved further, eight out of ten French people wanted smoking to be banned around schools, in parks, on beaches, and in places where there are children. What we are saying is not to ban for the sake of banning, but also to promote what we call denormalization. In people's minds, smoking is normal. Our aim is to encourage the younger generation, the children, and around places where there are children, not to smoke to show that in recreational areas, smoking is not necessary. This applies to a park, a beach, and so on. Gradually, we are trying to accustom this new generation not to smoke because we know very well that when there are parent who smoke, in more than half of the cases, the children become smokers. So we are really trying to work on this new generation."

14. SOUNDBITE (French) Anabelle Cermell, mother of infant son:
"Having a little three-month-old baby, I think it's actually a good thing. Indeed, every time there are cigarettes, it bothers me. I tell myself, oh, it's really not ideal for him, but there's not much I can do about it, or I would have to, I don't know, avoid terraces, not take the bus, not go to parks, and so on. So I think it's good for the health of little ones and children."

17. SOUNDBITE (French) Natacha Uzan, Paris resident:
"In restaurants, it matters, we no longer have to endure passive smoking. Now outside, in parks, I find it becoming a bit repressive and for me, I don't know if it represents a real danger, but maybe I don't know much about this subject."

20. SOUNDBITE (English) Victoria Shakhova, Paris resident:
"Here we have a lot of space, and if the space was small, I would probably feel much more that you have this tobacco around. So I think it's a bit overdramatized, and actually, frankly speaking, I can't imagine in France that it's forbidden fully but the initiative can be considered."
