To celebrate the release of #JamesBond007 #NoTimeToDie here is my take on why the character of James Bond has been constantly reshaped and reinvented over the years...

James Bond, Agent 007, Licensed to Kill. He is recognised across the globe, and as that rather strange concept of ‘a famous secret agent’ he is one of pop culture’s most popular and enduring figures. Since his first big screen outing in 1962, unsurprisingly the world Bond inhabits has changed a lot, and as a result his films seem to chart over half a century of popular culture. In a constant race to keep up with the times, Bond’s world had continued to moulded by whatever is currently fashionable…and even what’s become unfashionable.
Bond is basically a moving sign of the times - but the changes to the films have not just been the obvious ones such as technology and fashion. I’ve always thought it interesting that the character of James Bond, who everyone thinks they know, has also changed many times over the years, and not just due to being played by different actors. It’s always stuck me that some of the films are so wildly different in tone and character - even some that are only a few years apart – that if they didn’t all have the label ‘James Bond’ then they could be films of completely different genres about totally different characters. There are even some regular patterns to spot, where some of these changes go full circle, and after a few years seem to reset themselves and start again. Despite him being THE quintessential post-war fiction hero, Bond’s makers obviously feel the need to keep tinkering with and altering their valuable property every few years, sometimes even back and forth in repetitive ways. So why does this happen?

This is WHY JAMES BOND GETS CONSTANTLY REINVENTED…

This project began life in 2009 as my University dissertation, and I have since modified and updated it as the film series has continued.
