The U Day Festival is a global gathering dedicated to promoting the values of grass-roots internationalism, world-peace, inter-cultural brotherhood and social justice. The program spans two days and is designed to bring people together, to bridge cultural divides and to invite increased participation towards a common vision of an optimistic future. The program brings together artists, activists, visionaries and religious leaders to express the vision through musical and artistic performances as well as intercultural and interfaith activities in the host city. The aim is to offer a rich, multifaceted experience of our common human heritage as well as inviting reflection and imagination about our future together on this planet.
The ancient capital of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai has been chosen to host the 1st U Day Festival in December 2012. Chiang Mai was chosen because it is a multi-cultural town, popular with tourists in a beautiful setting and with a vibrant local musical scene.
The event takes place in two parts; U-Nite is the Saturday evening festivities featuring musical performances by local and international artists. U Day is the Sunday morning celebrations and intercultural ceremonies. Our hope is to use Thapae Gate as the main location for both the scheduled events.
U-Nite: Throw Your Arms around the World
U-Nite is the main musical concert of the festival and happens on the evening of Saturday 22nd December 2012. We have secured international reggae star Pato Banton to headline the event, supported by Renard Jude Shy of Easy Star and local rising star Sista Apsara. We will also have a host of local Thai performers and other international acts coming to perform at the show. U-Nite also includes artistic installations and performances by a number of local and international performance artists. This will be a concert the likes of which Chiang Mai has never seen before and an opportunity to gain worldwide attention.
U Day: Celebration of the Human Nation
U Day is a marked by a variety of ceremonies bringing various religions and worldviews together to celebrate our human unity. Religious and spiritual leaders are invited to participate in a show of togetherness, brotherhood and shared global citizenship.
We have leaders from the Thai Buddhist Sangha as well as Christian, Muslim and indigenous leaders who will participate in these ceremonies that will be shared around the world through multimedia and the internet.
Conclusion
The U Day Festival is a fun, hopeful, joyful event that brings together people from all around the world to participate in something truly meaningful and uplifting.
