I'm going through the top 20 Favorite Video Game Songs of all time as voted on by my community. This came in at number 3!
Last week I re-did my cover of One Winged Angel which was an over 10 year revisit. You Will Know Our Names is a song I covered much more recently and I had a much more difficult time deciding how to approach it. With Live and Learn I originally went all out with it's arrangement, so it felt right to go more to the source, but seeing as how I was close to the original with my first cover, it seemed I had to do the opposite this time around.
I remember distinctly when covering it the first time that the second riff was really close to sounding like Beast and the Harlot by Avenged Sevenfold but just pitched up. I had tried it down the octave but felt it was too far from the original, this time I really leaned into it and the arrangement kind of became born out of that. Originally I wanted to emulate a more Jason Richardson style by beginning it with orchestra elements and changing the melodies slightly to fit the dark feeling. That and the A7X influence really cemented that this was going to be a much darker take.
One of my favorite parts of my original arrangement was teasing the last chorus with an interlude before the hit, and this time I did it only for the first chorus to bring it back to the original feeling after coming back to the original feel for a second. Then when the chorus came in and I wasn't limiting myself to the original so much, the rhythm riff I wrote kind of just wrote itself and it became what I found made this cover what it is. It's very clearly a much different take on this song and I think some people might not like that, but this is for the people that love this song and are interested in hearing it in a new way.
The solo is just silly honestly, I don't have much to say other than it's really just meant to be ridiculously shreddy and reminiscent of the Beast and the Harlot solo in many ways. The mixing was suprisingly easy on this one even though there was a full orchestra with woodwinds, brass, percussion, and choir. I'm finding that my bass and kick levels have been fluctuating a lot on different systems so let me know if that bothers anyone at all and I'll pay more attention, but I've been really trying to match modern metal eq curves with all of these top 20 songs.
I've been getting a lot of comments of people being like "this song again?" or "didn't you already do this one?" and I'm sure those people haven't caught on to what the project of these covers are, but I appreciate you all for listening to my new takes on these. If you can believe it, the next cover is one I've done MUCH more recently and I have no clue as of now how I'm going to tackle it. Luckily, the number 1 spot is a song I've never done at all before so look forward to that!
Thanks so much for watching! This is the 3rd highest song on list of your most favorite video game songs. Subscribe if you haven't already and see the absolute top video game songs of all time!
