Not only does it mean that my clients are doing more than just sitting and talking, it also means that I'm doing more than just observing and educating my clients.
Getting down and dirty means I am actually engaging in the exposure practice with my clients in real time. I model how to move through the exposure effectively and productively.
Getting down and dirty means I'm not on the sidelines cheering them on, but rather, I'm in the game with them, running alongside them!
This is one of many ways ExRP is so different from conventional talk therapy. As an OCD specialist, in order to conduct Exposure Therapy effectively, it's not sufficient to just talk about exposure practice with my clients. I need to SHOW my clients.
This hands-on approach is one of the many reasons I love being an OCD specialist. I love getting to be there in those first moments alongside my clients, when they finally face their fears for the first time in years! I get to see that first spark of relief and the look in their eyes when they start to realize that they CAN do this, that there IS hope. There's truly nothing like it!
Getting down and dirty with ExRP means I get to be a part of a powerful transformation by supporting my clients through recovering from painful debilitation to getting their lives back and rediscovering who they are beyond OCD!
