Description:

Did you know that some borders in the world have remained unchanged for over 700 years? Here are the top contenders for the title of the oldest existing borders:

Portugal-Spain Border: The oldest uninterrupted border in the world, established in 1297. The northern section dates back to Portugal's foundation in 1143, while the southern section has been unchanged since 1267, despite some minor disputes like the town of Olivenza.

Monaco-France Border: Completely surrounded by France, Monaco's border has stayed the same since 1297. Though it’s been surrounded by different states over time, the border itself hasn’t budged.

Andorra's Borders: The oldest in the world, Andorra’s borders with Spain and France have remained unchanged since 1278, when a land dispute between the County of Foix and the Diocese of Urgell led to the establishment of joint sovereignty over this tiny principality.

Explore the fascinating history of these ancient boundaries and the stories behind their endurance!

Transcript:

These are the oldest borders in the world that still exist today!
First, we have the Portugal-Spain border, which is the oldest uninterrupted border, established in 1297.
The northern part of this border has remained the same since Portugal's birth in 1143, and the southern part since 1267.
Although the border town of Olivenza was never returned by Spain after its invasion in 1801,
we can still include the Portugal-Spain border in the top.
In second place, we have France's neighbor, Monaco. Completely surrounded by France, its border has remained unchanged since 1297.
The only difference is which country surrounds it. Initially, it was France,
then Genoa, then France again, followed by Sardinia, and now France once more.
But the world's oldest border is Andorra's borders with both Spain and France, which have basically remained unchanged since 1278.
This was when a land dispute between the County of Foix and the Diocese of Urgell
ended by establishing joint sovereignty over Andorra.
