As Joe Biden took the oath of office and became the 46th president of the United States, world leaders gave various reactions to the incoming administration, some with hope and ambitious plans.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Biden and said he hoped to confront shared challenges including "the threat posed by Iran."
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson started Wednesday’s question period in the U.K.’s House of Commons by congratulating Biden and saying he’s looking forward to working with him on common interests.
Johnson was joined by both the speaker of the house and the labour party opposition leader in congratulating Biden.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the election of Joe Biden was a "victory of democracy over the far-right" following the violent attack on the U.S. Capital by Trump supporters on Jan. 6.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged Biden’s administration to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement and lift sanctions on Tehran, while welcoming the end of President Donald Trump's era of "oppression and corruption."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen smiled as she congratulated Biden and Harris, saying “Europe has a friend in the White House,” during an EU Parliament address.
French President Emanuel Macron, Canadian Prime minister Justin Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi all tweeted congratulating Biden and Harris on Inauguration Day.
