Gates later explained the origin of the band's name: "A bread truck came along right at the time we were trying to think of a name. We had been saying, 'How about bush, telephone pole? Ah, bread truck, bread.' It began with a B, like the Beatles and the Bee Gees. Bread also had a kind of universal appeal. It could be taken in several ways. Of course, during the first year, people called us 'the Breads.'"
In 1973, tensions within the band increased, and after their equipment and instruments were destroyed in a truck accident, Bread decided to disband. Afterward, they reunited and each pursued solo careers. However, in 1996, the original members—Gates, Griffin, Botts, and Knechtel—reconciled and reunited for a successful "25th Anniversary" tour. This tour continued into 1997 and marked the final year that Bread members performed together. After that, Gates and the others continued their individual musical paths.
