Join us on our Rocky Mountains road trip! We spent this summer exploring the Province of Alberta and one of the highlights was our trip to Waterton Lakes National Park. Waterton Lakes is a national park in southwestern Alberta, and it borders Glacier National Park in Montana, United States. This park is where the prairies meet the Rockies and it's honestly one of the most beautiful parks we've ever been to. Waterton Lakes is home to forested mountains, turquoise lakes, cascading waterfalls, crystalline streams, and some incredibly scenic trails. It was the fourth national park to be formed in Canada in 1895.

We only had 2 days in Waterton Lakes National Park, so in this video, we'll take you to Driftwood Beach, Red Rock Canyon, Blackiston Falls, the Prince of Wales Hotel for afternoon tea, we'll explore the town of Waterton, and we'll also visit a bison paddock just outside the park.

Our visit gave us a little taste of what this park has to offer, and we cannot wait to come back and do some more hiking here in the Rocky Mountains! This place is a slice of paradise.

ROCKY MOUNTAINS Road Trip! 🇨🇦⛰️🚘 Visiting WATERTON LAKES National Park in ALBERTA, Canada

📋 Video Summary: Waterton National Park Adventure with Togo

Spotting the Bison 🦬

We finally find the bison in the paddock reserve – our best chance to see these majestic animals.

Note on the heavy-duty fencing (metal posts & wire mesh) needed to contain them.

Reminder: stay in your vehicle on the loop for safety.

Arrival at Waterton NP 🏞️

First glimpse of the park entrance and breathtaking mountain vistas.

Togo can’t wait to get in the water.

Lake Swim for Togo 🐶🌊

Togo splashes around in the calm, mirror-like lake.

Comment on the crystal-clear water and how perfect the weather is (despite Waterton’s windy reputation).

Driftwood Beach Discovery 🌲

Strolling along the shoreline strewn with colourful pebbles (red, green, gray, blue).

Overwhelmed by the pristine water, mountain backdrop & historic Prince of Wales Hotel.

Afternoon Tea Plans ☕

Excited for tea service at the Prince of Wales around 3 PM.

Split shifts: one of us stays with Togo while the other indulges in scones and pastries.

Stick & Teepee Photo Ops 📸

Togo hunts for his stick – comedic moment!

Attempt to get a cute photo of him inside a teepee (dog cooperation uncertain).

Next Hike Options 🥾

Considering short, dog-friendly trails: Cameron Lake, Akamina Lake & “Goat Lake” (2.5 km).

Jokes about Togo acting like a mountain goat.

Surprise Picnic Stop 🧺

Spontaneous break at a shallow river picnic area perfect for Togo to swim again.

Emphasize planning the route around dog-friendly activities.

Tea & Treats on the Terrace 🍰

Afternoon tea at the hotel’s dining room with panoramic views.

Goodie bag of treats stashed for later.

Room Tour at Waterton Lodge 🏨

Cozy second-floor, attic-style room (AC troubleshooting included!).

Parents in separate dog-friendly wing; we rest before exploring town.

Epic Cheat Day 🍦🌮

Hot dog, poutine, slushie… capped off with two-scoop ice cream at “The Big Scoop” (flavors: rum raisin & blueberry cheesecake).

Promise of extra hiking tomorrow to work it off.

Day Two: Early Hike at Red Rock Canyon 🌄

Up at sunrise to beat the crowds with Togo.

Walk along the river’s edge amidst striking red rock formations.

Bear Sightings… Sort Of 🐻🚫

Chat with a hiker who spotted bears earlier.

Only “bear” we see is the warning sign reminding us not to treat them as pets.

Recap Swing Chat 🪑

Quick sit-down on the new porch swing with mountain blooms as backdrop.

Reflect on last-minute trail closures (maintenance season).

Annual Parks Canada Pass 🎫

We pick up the pass for year-round access to all national parks in Canada.

Highlight: Waterfall Hike 💧

Early-morning trek reveals an epic multi-tiered waterfall.

Togo’s hilarious hesitation on the viewing platform.

Forest Regeneration 🌱

Note on Waterton’s recovery after a past wildfire: young pines & wildflowers bursting through.

Deer Encounters & New Friends 🦌

Intimate deer sightings on trail.

Meet a friendly hiker with bear-sighting stories.

Limitations of Dog Travel 🐕

Realization: some epic hikes require leaving Togo at home for safety & distance.

Final Thoughts & Recommendations ⭐

Waterton far exceeded expectations – a must-visit for Southern Alberta adventures.

Promise more nature escapes, hiking guides & dog-friendly travel tips.
