The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory is one of the premier X-ray light sources in the world. Scientists use its ultrabright X-ray beams to design new solar cells, batteries, materials for roads and bridges and treatments to fight infectious diseases.

Advances in technology, however, threatened to leave the APS behind without a comprehensive upgrade. Scientists will need smaller and more powerful X-ray beams to remain at the forefront of next-generation battery design, for example.

Building Brilliance is a documentary on the effort to upgrade the APS into the brightest synchrotron X-ray light source in the world. The short film, available on Nov. 8, 2024, takes you behind the scenes of the upgrade, from conception to commissioning of the new facility.

The upgraded APS will generate X-ray beams that are up to 500 times brighter, enabling scientists to examine materials at scales previously unimaginable. This will lead to innovations and discoveries that will help us face the energy challenges ahead.
