Grozny, July 2009. The body of Natalia Estemirova—journalist, human rights defender, and relentless critic of the Chechen regime—is found dumped by the side of a remote road. Like her friend Anna Politkovskaya, Estemirova exposed war crimes, abductions, and state violence in Chechnya. Like Politkovskaya, she had received repeated threats from Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
This documentary investigates her murder and the systematic silencing of dissenting voices in Chechnya and Russia.
It is a journey into a region where truth-tellers are marked for death and impunity reigns. Who killed Natacha? And who allowed it to happen?
