To start off, I’ve decided to go with Pigments as it offers everything you might need in one single place with a great level of control, from saturation to multiband compression, to filtering, and so on.
For the oscillator, I used the wavetable engine as it offers control over the phase, with the Mini V4 LPF wavetable loaded. I kept its phase at 0 and filtered it with the multimode lowpass 24db/oct filter.
I modulated the filter with the second envelope, which I set to 0 attack, 1/3 decay, and sustain with a slight release to avoid clicking. As for the amp envelope, I kept it in a gate-like shape with 0 attack, 0 decay, full sustain, and some release to avoid the clicks.
Now for the processing, and this is where the fun starts. I added a first multiband compressor with the amount set to 0 because I only need it for the phase distortion effect. This will add flavor to the sound and help phase align the bass with the kick. The goal here is to set the crossovers of the compressor so it creates a kick-like shape on the scope. I’m using Psyscope by FX23.
Then, I added a second multiband compressor for extra flavor and a soft-clip saturator with a moderate amount of drive for some warmth.
And there you have it. Now go experiment creating basslines with Pigments. If you’re looking for some help, I’ve created 10 basslines for Pigments to get you started, you can check them out on my Gumroad.
