Our destination? The legendary Valdez Fly-In & Air Show, one of the premier aeronautical events in the entire state. This is where the soul of Alaskan aviation comes alive. We're here to witness incredible aerobatics and, most importantly, the world-famous STOL competition. STOL, which stands for Short Takeoff and Landing, is the ultimate test of a bush pilot's skill. These incredible pilots, the true heroes of the last frontier, compete to see who can land and stop their bush plane in the shortest distance possible against the breathtaking backdrop of the Chugach Mountains.
The stars of the show are the planes themselves. You'll see the workhorse bush planes like the Piper Cub and Cessna, but the true legend on the tarmac is the vintage Douglas DC-3 from Everts Air. Watching this massive, historic aircraft—a true icon of aviation history—power up its radial engines is an unforgettable experience. It's a living piece of history, connecting the past of the Alaskan Gold Rush era with the present-day bush pilots of Alaska.
