Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and Donor sperm - Success Rates, Risks and Uses?
Choosing to use donor sperm for intra-uterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF), enables pregnancy in women who are single or in same-sex relationships. For other couples with severe, untreatable male factor infertility, or in the cases when the male carries a hereditary disease that he doesn’t wish to pass on, use of donor sperm becomes the treatment of choice as well.

Donor insemination (DI)
It’s the same procedure as IUI except that the sperms being used of donor.
Donor IUI is required in couples when the male partner has low quality semen parameters.
Hence IUI is carried out with the help of donor sperms taken fro sperm bank.
How is donor insemination performed ?
Sperm donors are thoroughly screened for infectious disease such as HIV, Hepatitis (liver disease), Gonorrhea ( a sexually transmitted disease), syphilis ( highly contagious disease spread primarily by sexual activity)
Stage-1 (sore)
Stage -2 ( body rash)
Stage-3 ( affects internal organs )

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) ( common virus that infects people of all ages ), Chlamydia ( common sexually transmitted disease ), Trichomonas ( Sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite ).
Any other disease as advised by doctor depending upon the case.
A donor is selected based on desired attributes such as race, ethnic background, educational background, career history, and general health etc.
The sperm is frozen and kept for 6 months and the donor is then tested again for HIV.
This is to make sure that he did not have a recent HIV infection when he produced the semen.
Various methods can be used to determine when the women is ovulating.
On the day of ovulation, the washed semen specimen is placed high in the uterine cavity (IUI).
In case where the female partner is normal and is below the age of 35.
The success rate of donor IUI is quite high.
