Until the NBC sitcom Amen, the Black church, while having been parodied in numerous movies and television shows, had rarely gone beyond the choir and the minister in Hollywood. However, when the show hit the air, audiences were finally able to see the political as well as humorous side of a centuries-old institution. Amen aired for five seasons on NBC from September 27, 1986, to May 11, 1991. It was created by screenwriter and television producer Edwin B. "Ed" Weinberger. He also served as one of the executive producers.
