Japan is "extremely disappointed" after sweeping tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Thursday.Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Ishiba said Japan had requested the United States exempt his country from the measures, which will include a 24 per cent tariff on Japanese imports to the United States.
Japanese beverage giant Suntory is looking to shift where it markets its spirits across the globe as it prepares for a potential trade war, its new president Nobuhiro Torii said.
Japanese officials did not indicate possible retaliation but questioned whether the tariffs were consistent with World Trade Organization agreements and whether some of the U.S. calculations about Japan's tariffs were accurate.
