#1980s #vinyl #vinylstory
Despite massive success in her native United Kingdom, and other parts of Europe, Alison Moyet is far from a household name in America. She’s had 9 Top-30 singles, and 5 Top-5 solo hits in the UK, not to mention the multitude of fans that adored her as one of the first New Wave dance divas as the lead singer of Yazoo, or Yaz, with synthesizer virtuoso Vince Clarke- of Erasure and ex-Depeche Mode fame.
Alison Moyet has only had one top 40 hit in America, but needs to be recognized, or, if you are just discovering her, brought to light, as one of the truly great singers of the rock era.
Alison Moyet has a gifted tonal range- with a huskiness and gritty power that she retains with remarkable control and vibrato. She has the unique ability to adapt her voice to different sentiments and genres.
I believe the husky richness of her vocals comes from her acquired fighting spirit. Her early days as a singer were in punk rock & pub rock bands in the South East Essex region of England. She had invaluable experience learning to battle in the rough & tumble British punk scene, and she relished the opportunity. She was so fearless and aggressive that the Yazoo partnership almost didn’t happen.
Alison & Vince actually first met when they were attending the same music school as 11 year olds. Despite that shared history, they never really knew each other, or hadn’t spoken, until Vince answered an advertisement that Alison placed in the personal section of a local paper- asking if anyone needed a singer.
When Vince saw Alison’s ad, he was in a dark place, having just left Depeche Mode, and worrying about losing his record deal with Mute Records. To maintain his deal, he wrote some music and needed to have someone sing his songs for a demo that he was going to submit to Daniel Miller, the founder of Mute Records. The song that Vince focused on was “Only You”, and after connecting with Alison from her ad, Vince asked her to put the voice to the song for the demo. Alison was reluctant at first, since she was fresh out of the punk band Screaming Abs Dabs, but she needed the money, so she relented.
The demo for “Only You" was created & submitted, and when Daniel Miller heard the demo, he encouraged Vince & Alison to record it as a band. The duo jumped at the opportunity, and Yazoo was born, despite a fundamental contrast between Alison’s fearless tenacious personalty, and Vince’s quiet, passive, mannerism.
“Only You” was the first single released by Yazoo, and it climbed all the way to #2 in the UK in ’82.
