Algeria and Burkina Faso may be in a dispute currently as a result of Algeria and Mali’s dispute. But they have one thing in common; their shared distaste for France. Like Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, Algeria was once a French colony for more than one hundred and thirty years. It wasn’t until after the bloody Algerian and French War ended that Algeria finally got her Independence in 1962. But since then both countries have had a shaky relationship. The most recent of which has led Algeria to give the 12 French Diplomats an ultimatum to leave the country within 48 hours. But why this decision and what is France's response? Let’s find out

Two days ago, the French Foreign Minister revealed that Algeria had instructed 12 French officials to leave the country within the next 48 hours. According to a diplomatic source, among those asked to leave the country are members of the French interior Ministry. The French Foreign Minister also mentioned that Algeria has decided to expel the diplomats in response to the detention of three Algerian citizens suspected of offenses on French territory by France. The three Algerian citizens were suspected of kidnapping a high-profile critic of the Algerian government in Paris last year.

You see, last week, French prosecutors indicted three Algerians on suspicion of involvement in the kidnapping of Amir Boukhors, a French-Algerian national who is a staunch critic of the Algerian government. Amir has a huge social media following on TIkTok under the name of “Amir DZ” which he uses to criticize the Algerian government. As a result of his vocal criticism against the Algerian government, he fled to France where he was granted asylum in 2023.

However, in April 2024, he was abducted in a Paris suburb but released the following day. Since then, French officials began a high-profile inquiry into his kidnapping. They believe that his kidnapping was politically motivated. And as such, decided to arrest the three Algerian citizens. These men who were placed in pre-trial detention, are also being prosecuted for “terrorist” conspiracy.
