On 5 May 2003, George Galloway MP dodged two eggs thrown at him as he made a speech at a trade union May Day rally in Wallasey, Merseyside. It came days after the Daily Telegraph published a report claiming that documents found in the ruins of the Iraqi foreign ministry showed that Galloway had been in the pay of Saddam Hussein. Galloway successfully sued the Telegraph for libel and was awared £150,000 in compensation the following year. Galloway's egger, David Anson, cited the claims about Galloway's connection to Saddam as his reason for protesting, adding that friends of his had been killed while fighting in Iraq.
