Christian mystics, including St. Teresa of Avila and St. Augustine, linked free will to divine grace, where surrender of the self enables union with God. Karma in Eastern traditions reflects constrained choices shaped by past actions but leaves space for conscious decisions to evolve spiritually.

In these frameworks, free will is less about personal autonomy and more about aligning with the Divine Will or transcending duality. The ego’s illusion of choice dissolves in the realization of unity with the Absolute, a theme resonant in Sufism, Kabbalah, and Hermeticism.
