Selected from the countless psykers born across the galaxy-spanning Imperium, these gifted individuals are identified and taken aboard the dreaded Black Ships operated by the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. They are transported to Terra, chosen for their exceptional psychic potential and value to the Imperium.
Most of these psykers meet a grim end, consumed as fuel for the Astronomican’s insatiable energies, a sacrifice to keep the Imperium united for another day. Of those spared, only a select few—those with the necessary strength and mental resilience—are trained to become Sanctioned Psykers. These survivors may go on to serve in various critical roles, including Inquisitors, battle psykers for the Astra Militarum, or Astropaths.
Interstellar communication across the Imperium, as well as contact between spacefaring vessels, is heavily affected by the Warp. Astropaths operate within this realm, projecting their consciousness into the Immaterium to link with others of their kind across vast distances. Through this shared psychic resonance, they transmit messages, alerts, and vital information in moments. Years of intense training—and the harrowing Soul Binding ritual—fortify their minds, granting them the strength to navigate the horrors of the Warp without succumbing to madness or demonic corruption.
