So many pop and rock songs have their roots in classical music. Classical influences on rock'n'roll, Part 1 of a 2 Part look.
Some songs are clearly using the classical melody, B Bumble and the Stingers' Nut Rocker, The Move's Night of Fear and The Shangri-Las' Past Present and Future are all immediately recognisable.
Others not quite so obvious include, Procol Harum's Whiter Shade of Pale and The Beatles' Penny Lane.
Johan Pachelbel's Cannon in D has influenced a host of songs including, YMCA's Go West, Green Day's Basket case and Kylie Minogue's I Should be so Lucky. Not forgetting many-a football chant!
Did you know that Heavy Metal has its roots in Gustaf Holst's Planets Suite? Black Sabbath's guitarist Tony Iommi's tritone riff was inspired by Holst's Mars.
There are so many examples, check out the show for more surprises. Watch out for Part 2, with lots more rock, influenced by the classics.
