Here we have a ground breaking classic, the song is thought to have inspired John Barry when he composed The James Bond Theme. Nightmare was written by Shaw in 1936 as a theme for his band to play at a live radio broadcast. At the time it was important for bands to have a theme, a signature which established the band’s musical image. Most bands chose Tin Pan Alley songs as themes, while Shaw decided to write his own theme. They recorded Nightmare in the studio in 1938 and it was released on Bluebird the same year. Shaw plays the clarinet and the song’s heady sound and Hasidic influences, gave Shaw’s orchestra a distinctive edge. My record is a UK issue, not sure of the exact year.
