Motion parallax is a depth cue that arises because of relative motion between the observer and the objects in view. When you're moving - say, in a car or on a train - objects that are closer to you appear to move faster across your field of vision, while distant objects seem to move more slowly. This happens because nearby objects shift position across your visual field at a much steeper angle as you move, whereas the angle to faraway objects changes very little. In physics terms, this relates to angular speed: objects at different distances sweep through different angles in the same amount of time. Even though all objects are stationary (or you're moving at a constant speed), your brain interprets their different apparent speeds as a cue for depth, helping you perceive the three-dimensional structure of the world around you.
