For a long time, African resources have been at the mercy of the West. We can all agree that Africa has not been able to benefit massively from its abundant resources. This is the reason for the term: resource curse. You see, as a result of the implementation of policies suggested by Western financial institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank, African countries have been struggling to enjoy their abundant resources. However, the three member countries of the Alliance of the Sahel, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, have decided to change this narrative. As the Burkinabe President, Ibrahim Traore, once questioned “Why is Africa so poor yet it has abundant resources? But President Traore has moved beyond asking questions to providing a solution. In today's video, we are going to show you some of the strategies and plans made by the leaders of the AES bloc to reclaim the economic sovereignty of their countries.

Let's start with Niger. Niger has been hard at work in recent times trying to reclaim control of its uranium sector. Since Independence, Niger’s uranium sector has been dominated by the French uranium mining company, Orano. As you know, uranium is a mineral that is used to produce nuclear power. And, after discovering it in Niger, France quickly entered into a series of agreements with the leaders of Niger at the time, which enabled it to have unrestricted access to the mineral. In return for this access, the leaders in Niger were guaranteed military security and protection from the threat of terrorism and internal threats such as local political opposition.
