This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Mitsubishi Outlander and Kia Sorento. Both of these compact crossover vehicles have just been released and come standard with three-rows of seats and also come with 4-cylinder engines. The Kia Sorento comes with two engines, a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an 8 speed automatic transmission, 191 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque. This engine is only available on the two bottom trims. The second is a 2.5L 4 cylinder turbo which replaces the old V6. It has 281 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque in an 8 speed wet dual clutch transmission. It’s the first in this category to get this technology. This type of transmission uses oil in its operation allowing for better lubrication and cooling for higher torque outputs. The system uses an electric oil pump to help keep things running smoothly. The Mitsubishi Outlander has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT with super all wheel control, it has 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. The Outlander also offers a PHEV. The 2021 model comes with a more powerful 2.4L 4-cylinder engine. This new 2022 model will have a PHEV available next year as a 2023 model. The Kia Sorento has a boxy, rugged look to it, very different from the previous model Some say it has a very domestic looking exterior like the Ford Explorer or Dodge Journey although the front grille is all Kia with the Tiger Face design. The Sorento comes standard with LED headlights and 17” wheels but 18-20 inch wheels are available. The turbo engine trims all have 20” wheels. If you are looking for a more rugged Sorento, there is an X Line trim featuring 20” dark grey wheels, it sits higher, getting an inch more ground clearance than the regular Sorento for a total of 8.3 inches We are test driving the top SX trim which comes with extra features like rear combination LED lamps, automatic power folding sideview mirrors and a panoramic sunroof which is only available on the top two trims. The Mitsubishi Outlander is wider and longer than the outgoing model. It comes standard with LED headlights and 18” wheels. Although it shares the same platform with the Nissan Rogue, it is 5 mm wider and 6 cm longer than the Rogue. It has a slightly wider track, but the wheelbase remains the same. Mitsubishi says, the refined dynamic safety shield design blends the feeling of protection and performance. All trims but the base model get the panoramic sunroof unlike the Kia where it is only available on the top two trims. The Sorento comes with plenty of standard features including, heated front seats, 7 passenger seating, an 8” touchscreen and Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The top two trims have the bigger 10.25” touchscreen and a 12.3” digital instrument cluster, it really does make the interior look more upscale with these larger screens.
The centre console of this Kia is very well designed, everything is at your fingertips including a leather wrapped shifter. It has a similar style to the Telluride, giving it a real upscale and classy look even though it’s not a luxury brand. A heated steering wheel is available on all trims but the base model, driver seat memory, air cooled front seats, quilted leather seats, and remote folding second row are only on the top trim. Heated rear seats are available on the top two trims. The Mitsubishi Outlander has plenty of standard features as well, you get an 8” touchscreen, a 7” information display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, 7 passenger seating, heated cloth front seats and a leather wrapped steering wheel. All trims, but the base model get a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power lift-gate with adjustable height and a wireless charger. The bigger 9” touchscreen along with Android Auto and wireless Apple Carplay is standard on the LE, SEL and top GT trims.
On the top 3 trims, you get a 12.3” digital driver display, heated rear seats and quilted leather seats which really elevate this interior to look more like a luxury brand.
