On 30 March 1981, US President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr as he left a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton. One of the bullets fired by Hinckley Jr ricocheted off the side of Reagan’s presidential limousine before hitting him under his left arm, puncturing his lung. While Reagan was close to death when he arrived at the George Washington University Hospital, his condition was stabilised following emergency treatment and surgery, leading to his eventual discharge on 11 April. Reagan was Hinckley’s intended target, but the president was not the only person wounded; White House press secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy, and D.C. police officer Thomas Delahanty were also injured. Investigations in the immediate aftermath of the shooting established Hinckley Jr’s bizarre motive was a desire to impress Hollywood actress Jodie Foster, with whom Hinckley had become obsessed after seeing her in Martin Scorsese's 1976 film Taxi Driver.

Presented here are a number of reports covering the attempted assination of Ronald Reagan, from the immediate aftermath of the shooting to the president's return, amid great fanfare, to the White House on 11 April 1981.
